Invisalign clear aligners vs. braces: What's the difference?

Both traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners work toward the same goal – to achieve a more symmetrical and straighter smile while improving a person's oral health. The difference between these two orthodontic options is how the process works to achieve straighter teeth. With traditional braces, metal brackets are glued to the surface of each tooth. Metal wires are then maneuvered between the brackets to help shape and mold a patient's smile over time. Invisalign treatments gradually move teeth into proper position with a series of clear aligners trays that are switched out every other week or as directed by your Invisalign dentist. The clear trays are created by using a 3-D image of your teeth to configure each set, so they fit correctly.

How does Invisalign treatment compare to braces?

Invisalign clear aligners have become an easier, more comfortable, and discreet option for adults and teenagers. However, traditional metal braces are, in some cases, the better option depending on a patient's orthodontic needs. Braces are worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so they are ideal for patients, especially teens, who may lack self-discipline with removable trays. One of the main benefits of Invisalign treatment is that the trays can be removed, allowing patients to drink or eat without their orthodontic treatment getting in the way. However, the clear trays must be worn at least 20 – 22 hours a day to be effective.

Is there a downside to either orthodontic treatment?

Invisalign treatments can fix a variety of orthodontic issues, often in half the time of traditional braces. Computer-generated and custom-designed for each patient, Invisalign clear aligners gradually move teeth into proper position with a series of trays switched out every 1 – 2 weeks. However, those with severe orthodontic needs, like extreme overbites, crooked teeth, or jawbone misalignment, may not be candidates for Invisalign treatment, while metal braces may not be ideal for athletes that play a contact sport. Metal brackets can potentially cut tissue upon contact. To determine which orthodontic treatment is right for you, our dental experts will answer any personal questions and discuss how to improve your smile.
