About Orthodontic Retainers
Once the active phase of orthodontic treatment is complete, a custom retainer will be made to help you maintain your smile results. A retainer holds the teeth in their new locations as the rest of the jaw stabilizes and helps protect the time and financial investment you have made in the orthodontic process. Our qualified general dentists are pleased to offer several high-quality orthodontic retainer options, including fixed and removable varieties. Whether you or your child are near completion of orthodontic treatment, or simply need retention to prevent tooth movement, we invite you to schedule a visit at Byers Station Dental in Chester Springs, PA for a custom orthodontic retainer.
Types of Retainers
Byers Station Dental offers three types of orthodontic retainers, which may be recommended according to individual needs and preferences:
- Hawley retainers are among the most common appliances. These retainers are made of molded wires, clasps, and plastic and may be removed from the mouth before eating, brushing, and flossing.
- Clear retainers are made of smooth, transparent materials. They are worn just like clear teeth aligners and can be taken out of the mouth quite easily.
- Fixed retainers cannot be taken out of the mouth and are bonded in place, generally behind the teeth, in one or both arches.

Who Should Wear a Retainer?
A retainer is advised for all orthodontic patients as soon as they have their braces removed or complete the clear aligner treatment process. Even though the teeth are in a properly aligned, straight position, a retainer can help to hold them in place while the rest of the mouth adjusts. In younger patients, a retainer may be ideal for keeping the teeth from moving until their permanent teeth fully emerge and while their jaws develop.
What Is the Treatment Process?
When your orthodontics are removed from your teeth, you can start the retainer process. We will take digital impressions of your teeth and send these images to a special dental lab where your appliances will be crafted. Once your retainers are ready, roughly 1 – 2 weeks later, we will schedule you to return to Byers Station Dental for a visit. During this appointment, our dentists will ensure that your retainers fit securely and comfortably over your top and bottom teeth. Our team will tell you when and for how long to wear your retainers each day and provide instructions on caring for your orthodontic appliances.
Caring for Orthodontic Retainers
The amount of time each patient will need to wear retainers will vary. However, we usually recommend wearing retainers for at least one year (or longer in certain cases) to prevent the teeth from moving back to their former locations. Our dentists will assess the condition of your retainers during your routine dental visits at our Chester Springs, PA facility to ensure they are still meeting your needs. It is important to clean your appliances thoroughly each day and store them in a safe place when not in use. If your retainers are lost or damaged, please call our office right away to have new appliances made.
Insurance Coverage for Your Appliances
If you are undergoing Invisalign treatment, your retainers may be included as part of the orthodontic process. During your consultation, our team will review your insurance benefits and inform you of any out-of-pocket costs for your retainers. Byers Station Dental is in-network with several insurance plans and accepts a range of easy payment options to help make getting a straight, healthy smile even more convenient.
